Synopsis of the manga Übel Blatt (2004)
Übel Blatt is a dark fantasy manga that follows the difficult journey of Koinzell, apparently a half-human with a childlike and androgynous appearance, recognizable by the scar on his left eye. His quest is one of revenge against those who betrayed and murdered him, and who are now known as the Seven Heroes of the Kingdom.
The story begins twenty years before the beginning of the manga, when Koinzell, once named Ascheriit, was a prodigious young swordsman whose talent earned him the title of Blatt Meister (Master of the Sword). His exploits led to him being chosen as one of 14 youths chosen by the Emperor of the Szaalenden Empire to undertake a dangerous quest to defeat a powerful invader, the evil nation of Wischtech, known for its machines of destruction and dark sorcery.
Armed each with a spear blessed by the emperor, these youths, known as the Fourteen Spears, marched through the enemy's wasteland. Three of them perished along the way, and when they arrived in a forest, seven of the eleven survivors chose to abandon the mission in fear. Ascheriit and three others continued and succeeded incredibly in their mission.
When they returned, they were betrayed and slaughtered by the seven who had given up. The latter returned to the Empire, claiming to have completed the mission after the other four had become traitors. Thus, they were hailed as heroes, while those they had killed were branded as traitors.
But 20 years later, rebels known as the Spears of Betrayal are defying the authority of the Empire...
